October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and one of the most important things you can do to protect yourself is is prevention. The main 3 ways to prevent breast cancer are:

1. Live a healthy lifestyle. Eat healthy foods, be physically active, maintain a healthy wait, limit alcohol and don’t smoke. Alcohol use, long-term smoking, and obesity all increase the risk of breast cancer. Maintaing a healthy diet high in vegetables and fruit, cutting out sugared drinks, and increasing physical activity reduces the overall breast-cancer risk by 10 to 30 percent.

2. Be vigilant about self examinations. Conducted at least once a month, breast self-exams can help you know what is normal for you so you can report any changes to your doctor. Here’s how you can conduct your own breast exam: http://www.nationalbreastcancer.org/breast-self-exam

3. Avoid exposure to outside elements that can increase the risk of breast cancer. This includes avoiding radiation (medical-imaging methods), environmental pollution (gasoline fumes, vehicle exhaust), and harmful chemicals that are present in every day products (like your lotions, deodorants, shampoos).
